Author Interviews, Featured — By Dorothy Thompson on October 11, 2009 at 4:08 pm
The author, Ruby Dominguez is challenged by the conflicting complexities of the past and future. Undeterred, she strokes with pen the somber and bright hues of her visions. She currently resides in San Francisco and works in the field of property management/leasing. She has been a recipient of the “Editor’s Choice Award,” by the National Library of Poetry in 1999 and 2007 for her published poems in the SHELTER OF SHADE. Thank you for this interview, Ruby. Do you remember writing stories as a child or did the writing bug come later? Do you remember your first published piece?
My first ever realization that writing was an avenue that I may take on was when my high school teacher informed me that she has sent my short story titled “The Little Christmas Tree” to the school’s newsletter for print. Then later on after having my babies (three boys, as matter of fact) I found myself cooing to them with self made nursery rhymes, my favorite being “That Baby Little Lizard,” sang in an Elvis Presley kind of style.
What do you consider as the most frustrating side of becoming a published author and what has been the most rewarding?
When a door opens for any opportunity regarding my book that was rewarding. But when a door slams shut to my face it meant a shortcut paved to success.
Are you married or single and how do you combine the writing life with home life? Do you have support?
Everybody thinks including family that this is a “flash in the pan” venture of mine. For the exception of my mother who loves writing herself and my boyfriend, Michael who would “eat glass” for me no matter what.
What do you like to do for fun when you’re not writing? Where do you like to vacation? Can you tell us briefly about this?
Research feeds my curious mind while shopping keeps me physically toned! (lol)
If you could be anywhere in the world for one hour right now, where would that place be and why?
Risking sounding childlike, I’d like to be up on a cloud traveling around the world.
Who is your biggest fan?
My three well-behaved and loving sons: Ryan, Monroe and Jiro.
Where’s your favorite place to write at home?
My writing desk is at the corner of my small dining area but equipped with ample lighting, I type on a laptop while music plays in the background.
What’s your favorite library and why?
The internet is the new world library. I can find anything and everything in a click of a mouse.
What’s your favorite bookstore and why?
Amazon.com is the best store where I can find and buy anything and everything I need and want from the comfort of my home.
Do you have any pets?
Yes, Jag, Hawk & the Good Girl. (otherwise known as The Gay, The Blind, and The Toothless) They’d do a good remake of the The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. (lol!)
What are you reading right now?
I am currently doing research for my upcoming book titled The Red Dragon’s Triangle – Boudicca’s Curse. It is the final book/screenplay installment to the curse trilogy.
Tell us a secret no one else knows.
At one time my father (allegedly for womanizing) and mother separated. I was bent on reuniting them back. So, one late evening my older sister and I secretly took one of my father’s used (ewww! I know…) boxer short from the clothes hamper, tucked it in an empty milk can, placed a tight lid on it and then put it in a pot of boiling water. This was supposed to make him remorseful and ask for forgiveness from my mom. IT WORKED! Or was that just a coincidence? I thought I’d take this secret to my grave. (lol)
What’s the first thing you notice when you meet someone?
First their stance, then their face to their eyes and then their lips as they speak their words.
Have you ever won anything?
I had been a recipient of the “Editor’s Choice Award,” by the National Library of Poetry in 1999 and 2007 formy published poems in the SHELTER OF SHADE.
What’s on your to do list today?
Nooooo! You had to remind me! Well, I’m putting my October schedule together before things start falling to the cracks. There’s the Screenwriting Expo in LA on the 17th wherein I’ll be pitching my script to five film producers (Good Luck to me!), radio interviews on the 26th with Kim Smith, finalizing two more radio interviews one on Halloween itself and then my guest appearance/booksigning on the 30th at the CinemaSalem in Salem, MA between 6:30-8:30pm an apt venue since I envision my screenplay up on the silver screen. Calling out directors and producers out there!.
I understand that you are touring with Pump Up Your Book Promotion in October and November via a virtual book tour. Can you tell us all why you chose a virtual book tour to promote your book online?
The world wide web is an infinite market source and a virtual tour has the function to tap into this market that otherwise can’t be reach with same the instantaneous.
Thank you for this interview, Ruby. Good luck on your virtual book tour!
