Dr. Holstein's ten year old sounds more sophisticated than my Clementine in "What A Christmas!", which is set in 1944 in the rural south. It's telling that generations later, the same angst still pulls them along, going from playing with dolls to analyzing what on earth adults are thinking? Ironically, girls don't seem to "grow up" past the age of 19 or 20, relying on the great wisdom they already had at ten, and applying the added experience of years, only to come full circle to our "Maxine" years and discover yeah, we knew that.
