The Luminist About The Luminist

IN COLONIAL INDIA, at a time of growing friction between the ruling British and the restless Indian populace, a Victorian woman and her young Tamil Indian servant defy convention, class, and heartbreak to investigate what is gained – and lost – by holding life still. Suggested by the life and work of photographic pioneer Julia Margaret Cameron, The Luminist filters 19th century Ceylon through the lens of an English woman, Catherine Colebrook and a 15 year old Tamil boy, Eligius Shourie. Left fatherless by soldiers, Eligius is brought as a servant to the Colebrooks’ neglected estate. In the shadow of Catherine’s obsession to arrest beauty – to select a moment from the thousands comprising her life in Ceylon and hold it apart from mere memory – Eligius transforms into her apprentice in the creation of the first haunting photographs in history.

Book Excerpt:

Dearest John,
If only you could have seen it.
No longer do I chase shadows as you have counseled against-oh, a good man and friend you are, to protect me from the native weakness of my sex! My house is full of fumes and frames, cut glass and in the cottage house, the blessings of an industrious servant. Where there were holes in the roof, there are now windows and black curtains, and pulleys and levers. Quite the luminist, that one. He can assert at least a bit of control over Ceylon’s capricious light, and bend it to my advantage. Hubris, perhaps, but only if I fail. And John, I fail no more. Whatever our Lord has in store for us, we have always been helpless to stop. In truth I cannot say where my son Hardy resides now, nor what has become of my belief in such things as Heaven. But I will never again lose a child to the distant regions of memory.
I will find the blend of matter and manner to hold the images fast, and then I will have Julia and Ewen for all time. As surely as if they’d been sculpted from God’s only constants, the light and the dark.
Send me nothing more, dearest friend and mentor. Soon it wll be my turn to send something your way. Something wondrous.
Catherine
