Thank you for this interview, Douglas.  Do you remember writing stories as a child or did the writing bug come later?  Do you remember your first published piece?

A: I remember writing stories from age 13. Haunted is my first published piece but I recall the first full-length story that I gave my 8th grade class teacher to read was based on the fabled city of El Dorado developed around a theme park. The park’s security is compromised to steal gold. Brings to mind Jurassic Park, doesn’t it? I was heavily influenced by Jurassic Park – the book that made me want to write.

You’re currently on online tour with your book Haunted. Would you tell us a little about the book?

haunted_bookcover A: Special Agent Kirk Ingram is traumatized physically and psychologically when his wife and daughter are brutally slain before his eyes. Angered and haunted by his inability to save them, he declares war on organized crime – the demon that took his family.

Meanwhile, on the western fringes of Russia, a potent nerve agent ‘Citex’ is stolen from a research facility in a rogue dictator state but is lost in a shipwreck off the west coast of America.

Years later, a marine archaeologist discovers the ‘Citex’ cargo and through a series of explosive events, Kirk Ingram is pitted against a criminal mastermind with plans to unleash ethnic terrorism through illegal immigration and global mayhem by shipping the Citex nerve agent via international trade channels to strategic cities around the world.

Haunted contains a lot of dark, serious subjects. Where did you draw inspiration from when writing this book?

A: Haunted is based upon what we’ve all been fascinated with in some form or other: dark transformations in people. It also draws on proven entertainment formulas: double-agents, explosions, fist-fights, gun-battles, car chases.

When I started off, I knew I wanted to bring large live-action sequences to literary entertainment. To this end I drew inspiration from the countless movies I have watched, visualizing how scenes would appear to the reader if they were ‘shot’ from certain angles.

I’ve also been inspired by the current global immigration scene. The world is growing crowded by the year and people of different ethnicities and social backgrounds and cultures are coming more and more in contact with each other. It’s not hard to imagine that this phenomenon can have disastrous results if you inject a few anti-social elements and create an atmosphere of fear and distrust in the social mix.

What kind of research did you do for the book?

I wanted the hardware i.e. the weapons and vehicles used by the various characters in the book to be as authentic and peculiar to that character or country as possible. I spent a lot of time researching the organization structure of the various law enforcement agencies, and the equipment they use.

A program on Discovery Channel inspired me to write in an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (drone) sequence and also research on the non-military usage of drones.

There are public domain reports on organized crime in the Balkans and reports on the need for the various federal agencies in the United States to be more cohesive in their approach toward new threats.

I watched a lot of videos online and also pictures of the places I was going to visit in my book to get a feel for them and relive the experience before setting down to write about those places.

What do you consider to be the most frustrating side of becoming a published author? The most rewarding?

I guess I get frustrated for a second when people tell me ‘Oh, we didn’t have the time to visit your website’ or ‘Thriller genres may not be the in thing’. But then in the next second I’ve brushed their inputs away because I believe I’ve got a good story and great entertainment. So far, as a side note and with fingers crossed, everyone has enjoyed the book.

The most rewarding… is to know that people genuinely like the book and the pace. They can’t like everything about it, nor will everyone like it, but overall I’m glad to be considered a story-teller.

Who is your biggest fan?

I don’t know really…I’m not yet famous enough to receive tons of fan-mail. 🙂 But in an analogy of sorts, I really like the review put up by Roshmi Sinha. You can read it on the ‘Reviews’ page of my website.

Where’s your favorite place to write at home?

At my computer desk, facing my poster of Hollywood action stars sitting on an I-bar in a caricature out of the popular worker-lunch picture at the Empire State Building construction site.

What’s on your to do list today?

Right now? Go home, write up a sequence I’ve been thinking about for a few days… read a little bit of Harry Potter 🙂 I must say I didn’t think Harry Potter would be so entertaining. Oh, I may read a little Tintin in prep for the movie that opens soon!

Can you tell us all why you chose a virtual book tour to promote your book online?

It’s comparatively economical and one of the ways to get across to probably more people across the world. It’s my first tour and I’m keen on trying every promotional trick to know what will be the best investments for future books.

Thank you for this interview, Douglas. Is there anything else you would like to add?

You’re welcome; thank you for having me. Yes, at the expense of sounding too commercial, I’d just like to say that for those who wish to order books via amazon.com, there may be instances when amazon.com says ‘Out of Stock’ but you can go right ahead and place your order; amazon.com will order fresh stock and ship it. I’m saying this because I’ve been asked a number of times.

Another thing: have fun, whatever you do, accept what comes your way, it makes it easier to live 🙂
