Chapter One: The Tower

Raphael’s eyes went wide. His gaze went up and up as his head went back. He turned to Mikael. “Well, it’s definitely impressive—by anyone’s standards.” Mikael nodded. In many ways mankind had made so many advances. The ability to build such a magnificent structure like this massive, towering ziggurat was a clear example. “Well, I see Yahweh’s spies are here.” Mikael turned when he heard the words spoken behind him. Before them stood Lucifer with a seemingly smug smile on his face. He found Lucifer could be quite irritating just by being in his presence. And to think this was the one every other angel looked up to in the early days prior to his Creator making this world. Mikael gave a forced grin. “Just checking up on you.” He glanced back at the tower. “What are you up to this time?” “Me?” Lucifer placed his hand on his chest with a look of shock. “I’m simply giving everyone what they want.” He looked from one angel to the other. “And what’s wrong with that?” “Nothing is ever that simple with you, Lucifer,” Raphael said. “You don’t do anything for others without it benefiting you.” Lucifer’s eyes widened. “And what’s wrong with that? A win-win scenario is always a good thing, isn’t it?” “It always comes down to motives. You know that, Lucifer,” Mikael added. “Your track record for pure motives, to say it politely, is nonexistent, you have to admit. Your motives are selfish and only harm humans.” “Oh, I don’t have to admit anything.” Lucifer suddenly pursed his lips and gave a slight squint. “And I certainly don’t have to justify myself to the likes of you.” Lucifer then produced a smile and held his arms out wide. “But I’ll share my creation with both of you.” His tone then turned condescending. “After all, you have to go back and report something, right?” He shook his head slightly. “I can’t let you go back with nothing to report. What kind of a host would I be then?” He gave a chuckle, leaning in slightly, but still had a tinge of sarcasm in his voice. “Don’t want the Ancient of Days to think I was inhospitable to his two . . . reporters.” He produced a broad smile. “So, come. Come see my creation.” Lucifer placed one hand on Mikael’s shoulder and his other on Raphael’s. The next thing Mikael knew they were in a room with several other humans. Being next to a window, Mikael could see they were high in the tower itself. Besides the people, the only thing in the room with them was what looked like some type of sculpture on a high pedestal. The piece was beautiful, composed almost entirely of various colored and various sized crystals arranged roughly in the shape of a large square, and this formed a three[1]dimensional cube structure with two sides open so one could see through it. “Well, your artwork is beautiful,” Mikael said, looking at Lucifer. “But what is its purpose?” Lucifer smiled. “All in good time. All in good time.” Mikael noticed the people in the room were guards of some type. Two men stood on either side of the structure, spear in one hand with one end pointed at the ceiling and the other end on the floor. Their torsos were bare except for wide necklace-type decorations around their necks which seemed to be composed of beaded material contrasting with their dark bronze complexion. Two similar guards stood at the door of the room just inside the hallway. Each wore loincloths, but they were ornate in design. These men were evidently not ordinary guards. “You must think highly of your sculpture to have so many guards protecting it,” Raphael said, looking from the guards to Lucifer. Lucifer gave a forced smile. “Well, once you understand its importance you will understand why.” “Importance?” Mikael asked. “What do you mean?” “Today,” Lucifer said, “we are embarking on a journey that will be heralded by all in the days to come as the triumphant pinnacle of humankind. And since you are here, you will be able to witness it.” Mikael glanced at Raphael, who shook his head. Evidently, Raphael didn’t understand Lucifer’s cryptic message any more than he did. Mikael looked back at Lucifer. “What are you talking about?” Before Lucifer had time to answer, the sculpture began to glow. The crystals refracted the light being produced and formed a kaleidoscope of color on the room’s walls. The guards in the hallway looked in, their eyes growing wide. One of the guards next to the structure pointed at one of the guards near the doorway. “Go tell the queen he has returned.” The man nodded and trotted quickly down the hallway. Mikael could hear the pat pat pat of his bare feet growing fainter the farther away the man ran. The other three guards genuflected while facing the structure. Evidently, they expected someone to appear. Lucifer turned to Mikael and smiled. “This is the beginning of a journey to bring me and my chosen greatness beyond mere greatness. My chosen will go beyond the heavens and bring heaven to earth.” Mikael sucked in a breath. “You can’t be serious! What are you saying?” He didn’t know what Lucifer had done, or was doing, but this did not sound good at all. Lucifer was talking as if he was God the Creator himself. “And what do you think you are achieving?” Raphael asked. A smile slowly came across Lucifer’s face. “Something wonderful,” he proclaimed.
