Pump Up Chats with Harriet Cammock – Author of ‘Through the Fire’

Harriet Cammock After an abusive marriage, Harriet determined she would use her own experiences in overcoming abuse to teach other women that help is available. She channeled those experiences in writing and through her blog; she provides inspirational and uplifting messages to many people. Harriet began The Faith Hour in 2009 and used this platform to launch The Renewed By Grace Conference, which was designed to bring together men and women whose lives were touched by abuse. “I want to show women that you don’t have to look like what you went through,” Harriet said. Using creative resources and with involvement from other community organizations, Harriet plans to host another conference sometime in the next several months. A published author, she now hosts The Harriet Cammock Show. The Harriet Cammock Show uses principles of surviving and overcoming; principles that Harriet learned first-hand. Harriet has appeared on The Word Network and Atlanta Live! and is a guest writer for The Hinterland Gazette. A gifted speaker, Harriet is available for speaking engagements.

Thank you for this interview, Harriet.  Do you remember writing stories as a child or did the writing bug come later?  Do you remember your first published piece?

A: I didn’t write stories but I was good at writing essays.

What do you consider as the most frustrating side of becoming a published author and what has been the most rewarding?

A: The most frustrating is marketing. The most rewarding experience is when someone has read your book and tells you much it helped them.

Are you married or single and how do you combine the writing life with home life?  Do you have support?

A:I am a single parent of two daughters. Being divorced doesn’t mean life is over. It takes more planning to be able to do the things I need to do. I write late at nights, after work, homework, dinner, children off to bed. After writing up until 2:00 am I sleep until 6:00 am when I get up and do it all over again.

What do you like to do for fun when you’re not writing?  Where do you like to vacation?  Can you tell us briefly about this?

A:I read, go to the movies with my children, shopping

If you could be anywhere in the world for one hour right now, where would that place be and why?

A: Under an umbrella on a sandy beach with a good book

Who is your biggest fan?

A: My two daughters.

Where’s your favorite place to write at home?

A: In my bedroom, with the TV muted in the background

Do you have any pets?

A: No

Tell us a secret no one else knows.

A: Ha ha, it wouldn’t be a secret anymore would it? I still believe in romance

What’s on your to do list today?

A: Finish these questions, write a new blog post, contact my media/pr person, make dinner, take the children to school, look for new grants, update my social media networks, read my emails, complete the revision of my book Musings of the Spirit, help with homework, finish writing, talk to my friends by phone, bank, return phone calls.

Now I’ve got a couple of fun questions for you.  If Tom Hanks, in the movie Cast Away, unearthed a copy of your book, how would that help him find a way off the island?

A: First identify a way out, and develop a plan.

You have a chance to appear on the hit talent show for authors, American Book Idol to determine whether your book will make it to Hollywood and become a big screenplay where you’d make millions of dollars.  What would impress them more – your book cover, an excerpt or your author photo – and why?

A: The Book Cover, they say a picture tells a thousand words; the cover speaks volumes about the content. That would grab them more than anything else.

You just got word that your book has received the 2011 NY Times Bestselling Book Award and you have to attend the ceremony to give an acceptance speech.  Anyone who’s anyone will be there and it’s your shot for stardom.  What would you say and whom would you thank?

A: In spite of the esteemed members of the Fourth Estate in attendance, including you, lol, I would be honest and give credit to my editor, my publisher and pr/media, my children and my friend Janet Shan. I would state my desire for an end to violence against women and children.

I understand that you are touring with Pump Up Your Book Promotion in (June) via a virtual book tour. Can you tell us all why you chose a virtual book tour to promote your book online?

A: The Internet has changed the ways in which we communicate. More people are sitting in front of their computers (at work and at home) and pretty much everyone has a web-enabled mobile device. Today, people are receiving their news on blog posts via AOL, Yahoo, Google and other Internet-based venues. It makes more sense to do a Blog Tour than a physical city-to-city tour because while not everyone will live near the city you’re touring, pretty much everyone will be near a computer (or some web-enabled device). This will allow me to reach a far wider audience.

Furthermore, because blogging is a visual experience and form of entertainment, people will be more inclined to remember it. With a Blog Tour, people will also have the option to follow or click on links that will allow them to directly purchase the item featured in the Tour and have it delivered directly to their home (as opposed to having to drive to a store, walk in, and carry out merchandise).

Thank you for this interview, Harriet. Good luck on your virtual book tour!

A: You’re welcome! Thank you for your time and diligence in helping me get the word out about my book.
