New Book for Review: Historical Romance ‘Montana Morning’ by Jill Limber

Montana Morning Jill Limber will be touring March 5 – 23 with her historical romance novel, Montana Morning.

In the Montana Territory town of Dennison, the law allows a woman to save a man from hanging if she agrees to marry him. Battered and nearly unconscious with a noose around his neck, Katherine Holman decides Wes Merrick is perfect husband material. Under the terms of her father’s will, due to a youthful indiscretion, she must be married to inherit. She expects her ‘husband’ to leave as soon as the deed is in her name. She wasn’t prepared for the fact that the man she has chosen turns out to be an honorable sort who decides to stick around and hold up his end of the bargain.

Excerpt:

Suddenly Merrick looked drained and slumped against the headboard. I guess I’ll be heading home.”

Katherine really didn’t want to have this conversation, but now she had no choice. “I told you, you can’t leave. The sheriff can arrest you if you leave.” Then she added hurriedly, “Or if you give me any trouble,”

His head jerked up and he stared at her. “What are you talking about?”

Explaining the situation to him was not going to be easy. Katherine chose her words carefully. “It’s the law. The only reason they didn’t hang you is because I, uh, claimed you.”

He couldn’t have looked more surprised if she had lit the bed on fire. “They were going to hang me? Why?” He sat up straight and leaned toward her, bracing his good hand against the mattress. The quilt fell away from his broad shoulders and the buttons of his nightshirt strained at their buttonhole across his broad chest.

She studied the distressed look on his face. Why would he wonder at the fact he just missed being hung. He had been condemned during the trial of the gang of rustlers.

“You aren’t a rustler?”

He looked incensed. “Hell, no! I’m from Texas.”

As if there weren’t any rustlers in Texas, she thought with exasperation.

“What did you mean when you said you claimed me?” He skewered her with an intense look.

Not meeting his eye, she gave him half an answer. “In Dennison, town law allows an unmarried woman to lay claim to a man that’s about to hang.”

He took a moment to digest her statement. “And then what? You own me now? Do I have to work off time with you?”

She squirmed under his steady gaze. “Not exactly.”

He stared at her and his eyes narrowed. “Well, why don’t you tell me what exactly do I have to do?” His voice held a hint of menace.

“You don’t have to do anything.”

“So I’m not indentured or sentenced to do time? What exactly is my status here? What would you call me? A guest?”

Her eyes got big and round and she blurted out the word, “Husband”. She sounded frantic. “I had to marry you.””
