ABOUT BO BRIAR

Bo Briar (2) Bo Briar nursed a love of art, music and architecture from childhood as well as all things ghostly. Her years at a British boarding school secluded in an ancient English county of majestic stately homes, historical towns and quaint medieval villages, nestled among mysterious forests and chocolate-box landscapes formed many of her lifelong impressions, beliefs and ideas.

Although having a natural affinity for the countryside Bo lived most of her life between the big cities of London and Hong Kong. Though widely travelled, she will always return to the two cities she calls home.

Her love for writing began at university where she would often diverge from composing dissertations to creating spooky stories. After taking a sabbatical from work in the hope of quality time with her two young children, she has also managed to complete and publish her first novel Morgan Hall. She is currently writing the sequel.

The Interview

Q: Can you tell us why you wrote your book?

I think I’ve always just had a tale brewing within me. As a child I was always fascinated by ghost stories, classical architecture, historical places and drawn to heroes that were a bit dark and mysterious such as the classical Heathcliff and I would have loved the modern day Lestat. I’ve always had that romantic gothic inclination. Then as you grow up, you meet certain people, experience intense emotions both good and bad and get thrown into situations out of our control; basically life is one big story. Together with a creative imagination and much life experience Morgan Hall just evolved naturally within me until I had to write it down on paper and transform it into novel.

Q: Besides books, what else do you write? Do you write for publications?

I am a professional writer and editor and I also write for magazines, newspapers and other publications. I also write publicity articles for PR departments.

Q: Where’s your favorite place to write at home?

I write in my office area at home.

Q: What do you do to get away from it all?

I take my kids to our club and we relax by the pool. But home is a safe haven for me and to just come home is already getting away from it all.

Q: How do you think book promotion has changed over the years?

Obviously since the internet flourished and social networking sites gained mass popularity, a lot of book promotion can also be done online over the internet.

Q: What is the most frustrating part of being an author?

There is a lot of waiting and patience involved. However, I’m sure most authors such as myself, have the dedication and belief in their work to see them through.

Q: What is the most rewarding?

Seeing your work, your very own creation in print for others to share.

Q: How do you think book publishing has changed over the years?

With new technology for example eBooks and print on demand, and an increasing variety of genres, book publishing has changed a lot. There are more people writing so greater competition. However the basics remain the same – only the best get chosen by agents and publishers.

Q: If you had one wish regarding the book, what would that be?

I’d wish for Morgan Hall to make it huge and also hit the big screen for everyone to enjoy. I would wish the book every success.

Q: If you could be anywhere in the world other than where you are right now, where would that place be?

I’m happy where I am, but if I had to choose somewhere else, I’d be on holiday with my kids around the historical cities of Europe. I love Europe.

Q: Your book has just been awarded a Pulitzer. Who would you thank?

I would thank everyone I love, everyone who has stood by me and my publisher.

Q: Thank you so much for this interview, (name of author). Do you have any final words?

I am working on the sequel to Morgan Hall and plan on creating a series. Like with Morgan Hall, the characters are passionate, dark, romantic, deep and intriguing. This time the story is very contemporary and takes the characters (new and old) from the UK up to the icy mountains of Switzerland and half way around the world to Hong Kong in the mystical East. The villain is even worse than the last! The sequel is much scarier. I get chills writing it.
