About Next Year in Jerusalem

You may be wondering why I chose the title Next Year in Jerusalem! for my new novel.  Why not Forbidden Romance or Romantic Travel or Spiritual Awakenings or Lust, Memories and Old Friends on Facebook?  After all Natalie and Maggie are two women, both caught up in issues that many of us face: a somewhat dull but faithful husband; a bad marriage leading finally to a divorce; a desire for adventure; unsatisfied spiritual longings.  They have a great friendship with each other, something research keeps confirming, keeps us young and emotionally happy, but life is far from easy for either women.

So again, why would I focus on a strange title that comes out of a book written thousands of years ago?

Here is one of the reasons.  Next Year in Jerusalem! is actually a phrase that shows up at the end of the Haggadah.  Those of you who are not Jewish may wonder what that is.  The Haggadah is a book that the Jews have used for thousands of years to celebrate and relive the Passover experience.  Many people know that the central theme of the story is how the Jews, who were slaves in Egypt, were finally able to escape and began their long journey of 40 years to get to the promised Land, which was Israel.  However, what a lot of people don’t realize is that this theme is universal and can be taken metaphorically for all of us.  That is why when the Haggadah ends with the fourth glass of wine being drunk, and the words, Next Year in Jerusalem! the phrase becomes so significant.

Thank you for this interview, Barbara.  Do you remember writing stories as a child or did the writing bug come later?  Do you remember your first published piece?

A: I kept a diary as a child, quite faithfully, although always three days behind, since I was in the fourth grade.  I don’t remember writing a story until high school.  My first published piece was probably poetry in the Norwalk High School newspaper.

What do you consider as the most frustrating side of becoming a published author and what has been the most rewarding?

A: Truthfully, the most frustrating side has been trying to sell my books!  The most rewarding has been the writing.

Are you married or single and how do you combine the writing life with home life?  Do you have support?

A: I am married to a psychologist.  I combine writing with my home life by writing at night, after my husband has turned on the television and become engrossed or fallen asleep to a legal show or football!

What do you like to do for fun when you’re not writing?  Where do you like to vacation?  Can you tell us briefly about this?

A: I love to walk in a city, like New York.  I enjoy eating out and going to movies and shopping.  I love to travel.  I have enjoyed Israel and find it wets my appetite for more visits.  I sense the mystery and intrigue and heightened emotions that are part of Israel.  I think that is one reason I chose to set this novel mostly in Jerusalem, a most fascinating city with fabulous energy.

If you could be anywhere in the world for one hour right now, where would that place be and why?

A: The Western Wall in Jerusalem.  It is a great place to pray and to people watch and just feel so involved in being alive.

Who is your biggest fan?

A: I don’t know.  I would say for my book, The Truth (I’m a girl, I’m smart and I know everything) one of my biggest fans was a girl, age 10 at the time, in Vietnam who read the book in Vietnamese and started to write to me.  We have been exchanging letters for two years now.  I hope to meet Linh someday soon.

Where’s your favorite place to write at home?

A: The computer in the back room of the house on the first floor.

Do you have any pets?

A: Yes, one cat.  He basically lives on the front porch, except when it is very cold.

Tell us a secret no one else knows.

A: When Next Year in Jerusalem! becomes a movie, I wish to have a part in the film.  I’m too old to be one of the main characters, but there are lots of other small parts, like being one of the guests at their Passover dinner party.

What’s on your to do list today?

A: Lots of chores and maybe some writing later tonight.

Now I’ve got a couple of fun questions for you.  If Tom Hanks, in the movie Cast Away, unearthed a copy of your book, how would that help him find a way off the island?

A: I don’t know, but the romantic scenes would give him something fun to read and maybe take his mind of his situation.

You just got word that your book has received the 2010 NY Times Bestselling Book Award and you have to attend the ceremony to give an acceptance speech.  Anyone who’s anyone will be there and it’s your shot for stardom.  What would you say and who would you thank?

A: I would thank all the people in my life who gave me love and time and devotion who may be unknown in terms of fame, but without them I couldn’t have written this book.

I understand that you are touring with Pump Up Your Book Promotion in October and November via a virtual book tour.  Can you tell us all why you chose a virtual book tour to promote your book online?

A: It is such fun to be on different blogs and converse with different book lovers.  Also, I do believe a virtual book tour is good publicity, gets people aware of your book and you don’t have to leave home to go on tour.

Thank you for this interview, Barbara. Good luck on your virtual book tour!

A: Thanks so much for having me.  It was a pleasure.
