Pump Up Your Book Chats with Gulten Dye, author of ‘Semi-Coma’

Gulten Dye was born and raised in a small town in Turkey and moved with her family to Istanbul as a small child. It was there that she earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing, and worked as a nurse at a local hospital before moving to the Philippines with her boyfriend.

After being there a little over a year, they got married and a short while after that moved to Shreveport, Louisiana where she immediately began her studies to be able to work as a Registered Nurse. While studying for her boards, she was allowed to work as a scrub technician in an operating room at a nearby surgery center. She passed her boards and worked in an operating room for many years before moving to Las Vegas, Nevada there she worked at a busy University Medical Trauma Center as a staff nurse for several years until she earned the position of Charge Nurse.

By 2001, she was divorced and living with her two young sons. Her desire to make more money became her impetus to start her own business, which soon became her sole source of income as her success grew. She has never looked back.

Gulten found her talent and passion in creating one-of-a-kind jewelry pieces and sold them to well-known people, such as Celine Dion, Rachel Ray and Mary Higgins Clark. She became an international success when her work showed on Entertainment Tonight and Insider and was for sale in the high-end casinos in Las Vegas and on high-end cruise liners. She then created a jewelry line called Metamorphosis, a line of interchangeable jewelry that brought her even greater success.

Gulten is also an author and self- published her first book Semi Coma – Evolution of my Intermittent Consciousness in 2011, currently selling on all digital media as well as in hard copy. Her second book “The Missing Link” is awaiting publication in 2013.

In 2013, she opened her new concept store where she not only sells her own designs, but includes many local artists of different medium, including a local authors section. In turn for being able to sell their artwork in her store, all artists have agreed to teach others their medium for the future generation free thinkers.

Q: Can you tell us why you wrote your book?

Writing for me is such a wonderful way of getting in touch with what really goes on in my subconscious and in my heart. As for my book itself, I guess you could say that when I started to understand that my happiness didn’t have to be from outside myself, that I actually had something to do with it, and that I could make more of it anytime I chose to, I wanted to share that message with others.

Q: Which part of the book was the hardest to write?

Not any part of the book was particularly hard for me to write; what was the hardest for me was to get it all organized after it was finished for I had a hard time deciding how to order the chapters.

Q: Does your book have an underlying message that readers should know about?

Yes, taking responsibility for everything in our lives right now from our misery to our happiness, and anything else in between. Our very survival as a species depends on our understanding of our own true nature and the importance of self-reliance, and the sharing of that message with others.

Q: Do you remember when the writing bug hit?

Yes, I was on an airplane coming back from a business trip to China, and I couldn’t wait to get home to start writing. As soon as I arrived home and slept for several hours even with the jet lag, I immediately began to write and haven’t stopped since!

Q: Besides books, what else do you write? Do you write for publications?

I write poetry, and my speeches for my lectures, as well as all my marketing material for my jewelry business.

Q: Do you have a writing tip you’d like to share?

Yes, very much so. Please don’t take writing too seriously . . . just open your heart and soul, get a pen and paper and start writing. Don’t forget, it’s your “holiday time” away from all the other things you have to take seriously.

Q: Would you like to tell us about your home life? Where you live? Family? Pets?

I live in Las Vegas Nevada with my 21 year-old son and my boyfriend.

Q: Can you tell us a little about your childhood?

I grew up in Turkey and lived in Istanbul until I left to follow my future husband to the Philippines, then to the United States. My childhood was wonderful for I have one of the most beautiful, giving parents anyone could ever ask for.

Q: Where’s your favorite place to write at home?

On my couch with my laptop and a cup of coffee, away from everything.

Q: What do you do to get away from it all?

I am one of those lucky people in that I get to do what I love to do every day. When I want to get away from the regular grind of the day, such as driving, shopping or doing paperwork, I do the things I love like writing, designing and creating jewelry, going for walks, and daydreaming. Sometimes, I have taken my jewelry to cruise on high-end cruise liners to sell them while I traveled the world in style; and yes, while I travel, I still write.

Q: What was the first thing you did as far as promoting your book?

I called all my friends and invited them to a big party at my house to celebrate my book and sell it.

Q: Are you familiar with the social networks and do you actively participate?

Yes, I am very familiar with social media since I have to promote my jewelry business on an ongoing basis, so I try to utilize all of the social media as much as possible

Q: How do you think book promotion has changed over the years?

Since I have only written my first book in recent years, I could not tell you the difference, but I imagine marketing is marketing. In the old days, I am sure there were difficulties in getting in a car and traveling all over the country to be on radio or TV, or have book signings, and although it may be a bit easier to use the internet or to be on satellite radio, it still takes dedication and time to do social media. I think, overall, it still depends on our own dedication to the promotion process itself.

Q: What is the most frustrating part of being an author?

Not promoting the book, resulting in lower sales.

Q: What is the most rewarding?

Seeing people lovingly reading my book.

Q: How do you think book publishing has changed over the years?

I think that biggest change has to be more and more people are self-publishing their books and then, in some cases, traditional publishing companies are picking some of them up.

Q: If you had one wish, what would that be?

To be able to write and sell as many books as I would like.

Q: If you could be anywhere in the world other than where you are right now, where would that place be?

In space roaming among the stars.

Q: Your book has just been awarded a Pulitzer. Who would you thank?

The Universe.

How do you make sales happen for you?

A lot of hard work! I sponsor a lot of on line parties, festivals and contests. Book sales don’t magically happen, believe me. An author has to work hard to earn her readers. And then she has to work hard to keep them by giving them something they’ll enjoy reading. I try hard to make my books worth a reader’s time.
