About Wayne Zurl

Wayne Zurl 2 Wayne Zurl grew up on Long Island and retired after working for twenty years with the Suffolk County Police Department, one of the largest municipal law enforcement agencies in New York and the nation. For thirteen of those years he served as a section commander supervising investigators.

Prior to his police career, Zurl served on active duty in the US Army during the Vietnam War and later in the reserves.

In 2006 he began writing crime fiction. Seven of his Sam Jenkins mysteries have been produced as audio books and simultaneously published as eBooks. His first full-length novel, A New Prospect, traditionally published by Black Rose Writing, debuted in January 2011.

Zurl left New York to live in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains of Tennessee with his wife, Barbara.

A New Prospect About A New Prospect

Sam Jenkins never thought about being a fish out of water during the twenty years he spent solving crimes in New York. But things change, and after retiring to Tennessee, he gets that feeling. Jenkins becomes a cop again and is thrown headlong into a murder investigation and a steaming kettle of fish, down-home style.

The victim, Cecil Lovejoy, couldn’t have deserved it more. His death was the inexorable result of years misspent and appears to be no great loss to anyone, except the prime suspect is Sam’s personal friend.

Jenkins’ abilities are attacked when Lovejoy’s influential widow urges politicians to reassign the case to state investigators.

Feeling like “a pork chop at a bar mitzvah” in his new workplace, Sam suspects something isn’t kosher when the family tries incessantly to force him out of the picture.

In true Jenkins style, Sam turns common police practice on its ear to insure an innocent man doesn’t falls prey to an imperfect system and the guilty party receives appropriate justice.

A NEW PROSPECT takes the reader through a New South resolutely clinging to its past and traditional way of keeping family business strictly within the family.

Latest News!  A New Prospect was named best mystery of the year at the 2011 Next Generation Independent Publisher’s Book Awards!  The link to the published results is www.indiebookawards.com/2011_winners_and_finalists.php.

I dressed in gray slacks, a blue-and-white plaid shirt, and my blue blazer. It was time to interview the grieving widow. . .
“Mrs. Lovejoy,” I said, “please accept my condolences. I’m very sorry for your loss.” I looked from Pearl to Juanita to Randy, and ended up looking at Fatso. “I hope you don’t mind a few questions.”
Pearl Lovejoy didn’t offer to shake hands. She immediately sat on a wide ornate sofa without commenting. I returned to the chair I previously occupied and felt as welcome as a root canal.
“Has your husband had any recent problems with anyone? Problems that may have precipitated a heated argument that ended up this way?”
“My husband had problems with no one, thank you very much.”
Only two questions and she sounded impatient. I just looked at her for a long moment.
Without prompting, she continued. “I know of no one Cecil would consider an enemy, and surely no one would ever mean him any harm or harbor any ill feelings towards him.”
I wondered if we were talking about the same Cecil Lovejoy. I only knew him for thirty minutes and I wanted to drop him down an elevator shaft. Hell, there are people out there who harbor ill feelings against Santa Claus. Surely someone took issue with Cecil’s lousy personality…

Here’s what critics are saying about A New Prospect!

This was a mysterious, wonderful read, I really enjoyed the way the author added a hint of an old detective movie lines that Sam uses. Sam Jenkins is thrall, smart, honest and a hard working cop, with a cocky sense of humor; I loved his character. The author added some curves in the book I didn’t see coming, which made for a intriguing ending. Not who I thought was responsible for the murder. This book keeps me chasing a killer along side, instead of in my head, well that’s if you want to really call them a killer. Wayne Zurl has a marvelous imagination and is very creative with details. Leaves you at the end of the book with a sense of justice, if you believe that some laws should be bent, and that karma always gets their man.

— Stacey Eldridge, Way2Kool Designs Review

Mr. Zurl’s writing is infectious. It gets under your skin, and the only way to relieve the itch is to read another page. Much more than `The Dukes of Hazzard’ with class, if you like great murder mysteries that tickle your funny bone from the beginning to the end (no pun intended), you’ll thank me when I tell you to latch onto a copy of `A New Prospect’ by Wayne Zurl, and if you don’t like it? well… ya’ll jus’ ain’t got ’round to readin’ it yet.

“I VERY highly recommend this book! If you love a good murder mystery, this is an excellent one! It’s laugh-out-loud funny at times, with great suspense, wonderful characters and a nice small town setting. I was hooked from the very start and could not put it down. I liked Sam immediately and love his sense of humor! I’m definitely going to be looking into the previous Sam Jenkins stories and I sure hope we can look forward to more books from him now that he’s in Prospect!”

“NEVER GIVE UP! Before you embark on your project, know what the industry is currently looking for. Query every agent who handles your genre. If you strike out there, submit to any publisher who will deal with you directly. If that fails and you still believe in your book, investigate self-publishing.”

“Some people are funny. When they see a person sitting at a table flanked by a couple signs, they assume you’re trying to sell them something they may not want; a book, a timeshare, or some new invention that makes polishing your copper a breeze. These people scurry away without making eye contact. Other people are curious. They stop to talk and buy a book or not. I’ve met some interesting and nice people that way.”

“A NEW PROSPECT, the first full-length Sam Jenkins adventure features the protagonist as first-person narrator, a character never at a loss for a cynical remark and quick with bits black humor at all the appropriate moments. It was named best mystery at the 2011 Next Generation Independent Publisher’s Book Awards.”

“Someday my least favorite aspect of writing may change, but that will only happen after I sell enough books and an editor allows me to break some rules only best-selling authors can get away with.”

“The Great Smoky Mountains are a popular tourist attraction. The National Park here is the most visited park in the country. It’s like being on vacation all year long. But Tennessee contrasts drastically with New York and Long Island where I lived and worked for much of my life. The slower pace and unique atmosphere makes retirement enjoyable.”

“Without humor law enforcement would be too much like work. After twenty years “on the job” in New York, I know this to be true. So does Sam Jenkins. The story is peppered with cynical observations and one-liners delivered at appropriate moments. Jokes and irreverent behavior compliment Sam’s unconventional way of solving a major crime, but not everyone in Prospect understands his out-of-town humor.”
